The Guide

Ka'anapali: Whale Watching From the Beach

The easiest start on Maui if you are staying on the beach, and the only one where you get your feet wet before the boat moves.

Ka’anapali has no harbor. The whale-watching boats come to the guests instead: they nose in to the sand in front of Whalers Village and the beach resorts, the crew collect your shoes, and you wade out and climb aboard. It is the easiest start on Maui if you are staying on the beach, and the boats are out in the ‘Au’au Channel, the most whale-dense water in Hawaii, within minutes of leaving.

The short answer

For one whale watch from Ka’anapali, book Sea Maui, in the booking box on this page. Its catamaran boards on the beach at Whalers Village, spends two hours looking for the most active whales with trained naturalists on board, and includes snacks and an open bar: mimosas, Bloody Marys and island cocktails. It costs from $103.47 a person, runs three trips a day December 15, 2026 to April 14, 2027, and is rated 4.8 from 855 reviews on Viator and Tripadvisor (checked October 2026). Sea Maui validates four hours of parking at the Whalers Village garage.

The bar is for guests 21 and over, with lower prices for children and teens. Because you board from the beach, it does not suit anyone with limited mobility; for a gangway onto a dock, go to Ma’alaea.

How beach boarding works

The catamaran runs its bow up to the edge of the sand, and the crew put a ladder or steps down from it. You take your shoes off, they go into a bag, and you walk out into the water, usually to about the knee and sometimes higher, then climb aboard a few at a time. Wear shorts or a swimsuit, keep phones in a dry bag, and bring a towel for the car. When the surf is too big to board safely, some Ka’anapali operators move the trip to Ma’alaea and tell you the day before.

Raft, sail or open bar

Teralani runs two whale watches from the beach on GetYourGuide. The classic sailing catamaran includes breakfast snacks, Kona coffee and juices and an open bar, from $113 a person, and if you see no whales you go again free; the 90-minute express trip at 1:00 p.m. drops the food and the bar for a lower price, $92 (checked October 2026).

For the low, close-to-the-water view of a raft, The Magic Merman loads on the beach between Leilani’s and the Westin, from $102.20, and Maui Whale Adventures' shaded raft leaves from behind Whalers Village five times a day, from $129, with your money back if you see no whales (checked October 2026). Both rafts advise against pregnancy and spinal injuries, and The Magic Merman asks for at least a moderate level of fitness. Maui Whale Adventures prices a child fare from age 2; The Magic Merman’s child fare starts at 5, and infants sit on an adult’s lap.

Ka’anapali or Lahaina?

The two are a short drive apart and watch the same water. Ka’anapali wins on convenience: you can walk to the boat from your room. Lahaina’s Mala ramp has more choice of small rafts, including Hawaii Ocean Rafting’s eye-level eco-raft, the most-reviewed whale watch on Maui. The Lahaina whale watching page has those, and the harbor’s daylight-only reopening.

Ka'anapali's boats board on the beach in front of Whalers Village. A short drive south, most Lahaina rafts launch from the Mala boat ramp at the north end of Front Street, and Lahaina Small Boat Harbor runs daylight trips only, for now.
