How a Lahaina Whale Watch Works
The town is rebuilding, so the meeting point matters more than it used to.
Check Where Your Boat Leaves From
Rafts and small boats launch from the Mala boat ramp at the north end of Front Street. A few larger boats use Lahaina Small Boat Harbor again. Your confirmation names the place; they are about a mile apart.
Park in a County Lot
The Mala trailer lot is reserved for boat trailers. For the harbor, the county's free 3-hour lots at 116 Prison Street and 500 Front Street are where crews meet their guests and walk them down.
Arrive on Time
Makai checks in at least 15 minutes before departure, under the tree on the ocean side of the Mala trailer lot. A late check-in counts as a no-show, with no refund.
Book Ahead, in Daylight
Nothing is sold at the harbor, and harbor trips run between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. while the power is off. The rafts at Mala keep their own schedules, from about 6:30 a.m. to the late afternoon.

The Guide
Lahaina Whale Watching in 2026: What Runs, and From Where
The harbor is back in part, the rafts never left the Mala ramp, and the whales are where they always were.
Lahaina was the whale-watching capital of Maui before the August 2023 fire, and it is still the closest town to the busiest whale water in Hawaii: the ‘Au’au Channel, between Maui and Lana’i. What changed is where the boats leave from. Most of Lahaina’s rafts and small boats launch from the Mala boat ramp at the north end of Front Street, which reopened to commercial boats two months after the fire. Lahaina Small Boat Harbor, in the historic town, reopened in a limited way on December 15, 2025.
The harbor in 2026, plainly
The harbor reopened for commercial trips on December 15, 2025, in daylight only, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and mooring is still not allowed (DLNR). The reason is power: as of October 2026 the harbor and its new restrooms are waiting for the utility to bring electricity back (DLNR rebuild update, October 8, 2026). Four companies were set to run trips at the reopening, and seven were back by June 2026, out of 48 that worked from the harbor before the fire; twelve moved to Ma’alaea (Honolulu Star-Advertiser). Dredging is due to finish in November 2026, and the piers, wharves and harbor office are scheduled to be rebuilt through 2027, the outer wharf into 2028; the state notes that every date can change.
Two practical points follow. Book ahead: there is no ticket desk at the harbor. And park in a county lot: the free 3-hour lots at 116 Prison Street and 500 Front Street are where crews meet their guests and walk them to the dock (County of Maui). Front Street reopened to traffic between Papalaua and Shaw streets on August 1, 2026.

Where Lahaina’s boats leave from
- Mala boat ramp, north end of Front Street: Makai Adventures, Ultimate Whale Watch, Dive Maui, Hawaii Ocean Rafting and the small-group boat run by Lahaina fire survivors. Ultimate, Dive Maui and Hawaii Ocean Rafting check you in on Front Street near the Cannery Mall, a short walk from the ramp.
- Lahaina Small Boat Harbor: the Hawaii Ocean Project whale watch boards at the main loading dock nearest the lighthouse; Pacific Whale Foundation’s whale-watch sail meets at 116 Prison Street; Sail Maui’s 7:30 a.m. morning sail leaves from the harbor too.
The two are about a mile apart, and the boats do not swap. Read the meeting point in your confirmation before you set off.

Raft, small boat or harbor boat
The rafts from Mala are the reason to start in Lahaina. Hawaii Ocean Rafting’s eco-raft is the most-reviewed whale watch on Maui (4.9 from 2,859 reviews), from $85.16 for 90 minutes (checked October 2026); it seats you just above the water. Ultimate’s rafts cost from $77 for 90 minutes and $88 for two hours, and Dive Maui’s small-group raft $80.60 for 90 minutes on weekends and $97 for two hours, for a party of 1 to 4 (checked October 2026). All three turn away pregnant travelers and children under 3, and none is a dry ride.
The harbor boats are for comfort. The Hawaii Ocean Project boat has several decks, a shaded cabin with windows and a restroom, and caps its trips at 80 passengers; it is generally wheelchair accessible, but call before booking to confirm. It costs $69.95 and runs December 15, 2026 to May 15, 2027; its listing promises “guaranteed whale sightings” and does not say what follows if there are none. Pacific Whale Foundation’s catamaran from the harbor costs $111.98, runs November 15, 2026 to March 31, 2027, and lets you go again free within a year if you see no whales (checked October 2026).
Sunset and late trips
While the harbor’s 6 p.m. limit stands, the late trips out of town leave from the Mala ramp: Ultimate's 4:50 p.m. raft and Dive Maui's sunset whale watch. For a sunset dinner on the water, the boats leave from Ma’alaea.
If you are staying in Ka’anapali
Ka’anapali’s own boats board on the beach in front of Whalers Village, which saves the drive. The Ka’anapali whale watching page has them; the Mala ramp is a short drive south, and most of the rafts are here.
Two Hours in the Channel off Lahaina

Lahaina Whale Watching: Questions
Planning a whale watch from Lahaina while the town rebuilds.
Yes, in a limited way. Lahaina Small Boat Harbor reopened for commercial trips on December 15, 2025, in daylight only, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with no mooring, until the harbor has power again (DLNR). Seven operators were back by June 2026. Most of Lahaina's rafts never left the Mala boat ramp at the north end of town.
Most from the Mala boat ramp; a few from the harbor. Makai Adventures, Ultimate Whale Watch, Dive Maui and Hawaii Ocean Rafting launch from the Mala ramp. The Hawaii Ocean Project boat and Pacific Whale Foundation's Lahaina sail use Lahaina Small Boat Harbor. Your confirmation names the meeting point; the two are about a mile apart.
For the harbor, in the free 3-hour county lots at 116 Prison Street or 500 Front Street. Boat crews meet guests there and walk them down (County of Maui). At the Mala ramp, the trailer lot is reserved for boat trailers, so use the public parking nearby.
From the Mala ramp, yes; from the harbor, not while the 6 p.m. limit stands. Ultimate runs a 4:50 p.m. raft and Dive Maui a sunset whale watch from the Mala ramp. For a sunset dinner cruise, the boats leave from Ma'alaea.
From $69.95 on the harbor's multi-deck boat to $108.85 on Makai's fast boat. Ultimate's 90-minute raft is $77 and Hawaii Ocean Rafting's $85.16 (checked October 2026). Gratuities are extra.
For whales close to shore and small boats, Lahaina; for big steady boats, Ma'alaea. Lahaina sits on the 'Au'au Channel, the most whale-dense water in Hawaii, and has most of the rafts. Ma'alaea has the large catamarans and is closer for anyone staying in Kihei or Wailea.
