The Guide
Ma'alaea: Where the Big Whale-Watching Boats Leave From
The harbor between West and South Maui, and the boats that suit families, nervous sailors and anyone who wants a restroom on board.
Ma’alaea Harbor sits on Ma’alaea Bay, on the low isthmus between Maui’s two volcanoes, and it is where the island’s large whale-watching boats are based: the double-deck catamarans, Pacific Whale Foundation’s naturalist fleet, the sailing catamarans and the dinner cruises. It is a short drive from Kihei, Wailea, Kahului and upcountry, and after the 2023 fire twelve companies that used to work from Lahaina moved their boats here (Honolulu Star-Advertiser, June 2026). If you want shade, a restroom and a ride that does not bounce, start here.
The short answer
For one whale watch from Ma’alaea, book Quicksilver, in the booking box on this page. It is a double-deck power catamaran: the open upper deck is where you watch, the shaded cabin below is where you get out of the sun, and there are two restrooms, free sodas and juice, beer and cocktails for sale, and a hydrophone to listen to the whales. Trips last two hours and run November 24, 2026 to April 30, 2027, from $59.95 a person for the early and mid-morning trips or $49.95 for the afternoon trip, rated 4.6 from 1,669 reviews on Viator and Tripadvisor (checked October 2026).
It takes all ages, and children 6 and under ride free. It is a working boat rather than a luxury one; if you want naturalists explaining every surfacing, or an open bar, look at the choices below.

See the super raft →Prices, ratings and review counts from the Viator listings (checked October 2026). Operators price by season and time of day; treat the figures as the shape of the market, not a quote.
Pacific Whale Foundation
The Pacific Whale Foundation whale watch is the one to choose if you want to understand what you are watching. Certified marine naturalists lead every trip, there are hydrophones on board, and if you see no whales you go again free. It costs $99.97 a person and runs November 1, 2026 to April 15, 2027; children 4 and under ride free but must be on the booking (checked October 2026). Check-in is 45 minutes before departure at the foundation’s store in the Maui Harbor Shops. Pacific Whale Foundation is a nonprofit, and its eco whale watch on GetYourGuide adds a Jr. Naturalist program for children, from $94 (checked October 2026).
The Alii Nui is the open-bar choice: a 65-foot catamaran on whale-watching-only charters, from $139 a person, December 1, 2026 to April 15, 2027. Its listing counts “guaranteed humpback whale sightings on every charter” among the inclusions and does not say what follows if there are none (checked October 2026).
Sunset and dinner cruises
Ma’alaea is the harbor for an evening on the water. Pacific Whale Foundation’s sunset dinner cruise runs three hours with a four-course dinner and mai tais and other drinks included, from $189.36 a person, November 15, 2026 to April 15, 2027 (checked October 2026). For a cheaper late trip, Malolo’s afternoon catamaran whale watch costs $60 on GetYourGuide (checked October 2026), and Quicksilver’s last trip of the day leaves in the late afternoon.
Under sail
Two sails leave from Ma’alaea in season. Sail Maui’s midday sail heads into the ‘Au’au Channel at 1:30 p.m. with snacks and drinks, alcohol included, from $110.27 (checked October 2026). Pacific Whale Foundation’s deluxe three-hour sail with lunch is $137 on GetYourGuide (checked October 2026). A sail is quieter than a power catamaran, which suits the hydrophone, but it covers less water.
Parking and the wind
Parking at Ma’alaea is paid, both in the harbor lots along the water and at the Maui Harbor Shops lot in front of the aquarium; pay at the kiosk or with the QR code, because unpaid cars are towed. Allow time for it, since most boats here check in 30 to 45 minutes before departure.
The trade winds usually build through the day. The National Weather Service forecasts Ma’alaea Bay as its own marine zone, and it is often under a small craft advisory when the trades are strong. If anyone in your group is prone to seasickness, take the first trip of the morning; the seasickness guide has more. If you are staying in Kihei or Wailea, the rafts from the Kihei boat ramp are the other choice on the south side.

The same Quicksilver catamaran is also listed on GetYourGuide as a two-hour power catamaran whale watch, from $50 (checked October 2026); compare the dates on both before you book.
A Steady Boat, Whales on Both Sides

Ma'alaea Whale Watching: Questions
Planning a whale watch from the harbor between West and South Maui.
Yes: Ma'alaea Bay and the water toward Molokini hold whales all season, and the harbor has the most large boats on Maui. It is also central, a short drive from Kihei, Wailea, Kahului and upcountry. The trade-off is wind: the trades usually build through the day, so mornings are calmer.
In the paid harbor lots or the Maui Harbor Shops lot, 300 Ma'alaea Road. Pay at the kiosk or by QR code; unpaid cars can be towed. Quicksilver and Pacific Whale Foundation both check guests in at the Maui Harbor Shops.
A big catamaran: Quicksilver or Pacific Whale Foundation. Both take all ages and have shade and restrooms. Quicksilver lets children 6 and under ride free, and Pacific Whale Foundation children 4 and under, with a Jr. Naturalist program on its eco cruise.
From $49.95 on Quicksilver's afternoon trip to $139 on the Alii Nui open-bar catamaran. Pacific Whale Foundation's whale watch is $99.97 and its sunset dinner cruise $189.36 (checked October 2026). Parking and gratuities are extra.
Yes: see no whales and you go again free. Its naturalist-led trips from Ma'alaea run November 1, 2026 to April 15, 2027 (checked October 2026).
Earlier than the check-in time, because of parking. Quicksilver checks in 30 minutes before departure and Pacific Whale Foundation 45 minutes before; allow time to find a space and pay first.
