Will I Get Seasick on a Maui Whale Watch?

Do people get seasick whale watching in Maui? How sheltered the water is, the calmest boats and departure times, and what to take before you board.

Updated October 2026

Some people do, but fewer than on most whale watches elsewhere: Maui’s whales winter in sheltered, shallow water on the lee side of the island. If you are prone to it, book the first trip of the morning on a big catamaran, take motion-sickness medicine beforehand, and stay on the open deck looking at the horizon. Rafts bounce more, and several are not suitable for people prone to seasickness.

Why Maui is easier than most

Humpbacks come to Maui for calm, warm water, and that is what the boats work in. The ‘Au’au Channel off Lahaina and Ka’anapali is shallow and sheltered by Lana’i and Moloka’i, and the trips are short: two hours, often less, with whales close to shore.

The exception is wind. The trade winds usually build through the day, and Ma’alaea Bay is often under a small craft advisory when they are strong (National Weather Service). A choppy afternoon is when most people feel it.

The calmest choice

Pick the first departure of the morning, on the biggest boat you can. Quicksilver's double-deck catamaran from Ma’alaea leaves at 8:00 a.m. in season, has a shaded cabin and two restrooms, and costs from $59.95 a person (checked October 2026). A heavy, wide hull rolls far less than a raft, and the upper deck gives you the horizon to look at.

What to take, and when

Take motion-sickness medicine about an hour before departure, not once you feel ill. The common over-the-counter options are antihistamines such as meclizine and dimenhydrinate, taken 30 to 60 minutes before you travel (Mayo Clinic); both can make you drowsy. A scopolamine patch needs a prescription. Ask a pharmacist or doctor which suits you, and check the dose and age limits for children.

On the boat:

  • Stay outside, in the fresh air, and look at the horizon or the islands rather than your phone screen.
  • Stand or sit near the middle of the boat, where the motion is smallest, and low down on a two-deck boat.
  • Eat something light before you go; an empty stomach and a heavy breakfast are both worse.
  • Drink water, skip the open bar on the way out if you are unsure.
  • Tell the crew. They have seen it before, they know the steadiest spot on their boat, and they have bags.

Rafts and seasickness

A raft is low, light and fast, which is why it is exciting and why it moves more. It also has no cabin to hide in. Several rafts are not suitable for people prone to seasickness. If someone in your group still wants the raft, go at first light, when Ultimate’s 6:30 a.m. raft or Redline's 7 a.m. trip from Kihei leaves on the flattest water; the morning or afternoon guide has the departure times, and the raft or catamaran guide the rest of the trade-offs.
