Whale Watching in Maui with Kids
Whale watching in Maui with kids: minimum ages boat by boat, which trips let small children ride free, raft or catamaran for families, and what to pack.
With children under 3, or anyone in the family who is pregnant, take a large catamaran from Ma’alaea: they take all ages and let the youngest ride free. From about 3 up, a raft is possible, and from 8 every whale watch on Maui is open to you. The age limits are the operators’, set for the bumps on a fast small boat, and they are firm: check them before you book, not at the dock.
The family pick
Pacific Whale Foundation’s eco whale watch from Ma'alaea is built with children in mind. Certified marine naturalists lead every trip, there is a Jr. Naturalist program on board for kids, hydrophones carry the whale song, and if you see no whales you go again free. It costs from $94 a person on GetYourGuide (checked October 2026), and on Pacific Whale Foundation’s whale watches children 4 and under ride free, as long as they are on the booking.

Raft or catamaran with children
A catamaran is the easier day with small children. There is shade, a cabin to retreat to, restrooms, and room to move; a toddler who loses interest after forty minutes can nap or eat. Quicksilver even allows strollers on board. A raft is the better adventure for school-age children who like speed and spray: they sit at the water’s edge, and a whale surfacing nearby is unforgettable at that height. But rafts have little shade and usually no restroom, and two hours on a bench in the sun is long for a five-year-old.
The raft or catamaran guide has the full comparison.

What to bring
- Sun protection that stays on: a hat with a strap and sunglasses. Hawaii Ocean Rafting allows only reef-safe rub-on sunscreen, no sprays.
- A light layer for the ride back, when the wind and the spray cool you down.
- Shoes that come off easily. Several rafts and the Ka’anapali beach-boarding boats are barefoot.
- A dry bag for phones and a spare set of clothes for small children on a raft.
- Water and a snack. Some boats include drinks, some sell them, and some let you bring your own in cans or plastic only: check your booking.
- Motion-sickness medicine, if anyone needs it, taken about an hour before departure; ask a pharmacist about doses for children. See the seasickness guide.
- Cash for the crew. Gratuities are rarely included.
Timing the trip with children
Book a mid-morning departure on a big boat: after breakfast, before the afternoon wind, and back for lunch. Avoid the last trip of the day with tired children; on a raft, take the first one, when the water is flattest. More in morning or afternoon.
